Several scientific studies have concluded that resveratrol and other antioxidants found in plants – known as polyphenols – can help prevent and treat certain types of cancer. Antioxidants help protect cells from being damaged by free radicals and potentially becoming cancerous.

In multiple tests, resveratrol has been shown to work for cancer prevention at every stage of the disease: initiation, promotion and progression. It can prevent or slow the growth of many types of cancerous cells, and also reduces inflammation as well as the production of NF kappa B. This is a protein that is formed by the body when it comes under attack, but also aids in the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Additionally, resveratrol works to mitigate the damage done by cancerous cells when they die by inducing white blood cells to mop up the cellular debris that remains, in a process known as apoptosis. In contrast, radiation and chemotherapy break open the cancer cells, which spill their contents into the body and cause inflammation that damages nearby healthy cells.

A recent study detailed in the July 2008 edition of Cancer Prevention Research showed that resveratrol inhibits the formation of abnormal cells that can develop into breast cancer. By preventing the formation of estrogen DNA adducts, it is thought that resveratrol can stop breast cancer in its tracks at an early stage of development.

Skin cancer is another area where scientists have made exciting discoveries. When researchers applied resveratrol to the skin of mice and then exposed them to solar radiation (UVB), the mice developed significantly fewer skin tumors than normal. Even when the resveratrol was applied after solar exposure, tumor growth was diminished.

Resveratrol has also been proven to suppress the development of many other cancers, including those of the stomach, prostate, colon, ovary and cervix. Research conducted over the next few years is bound to yield some interesting results concerning the benefits of resveratrol for cancer prevention.
